    Track Saws: A Buyer’s Guide

Track saws are designed to make your work easier, more precise, and safer. But with so many options out there, it can be hard to decide which one is the best for your needs. That’s why we created this guide—to help you find the perfect track saw. Read on!

The Working of a Track Saw

A track saw is a special type of circular saw that attaches to a metal guide track, allowing the user to make precise and straight cuts. It allows for fast and accurate cuts with minimal setup time. The tool includes two components: the saw itself, which is typically connected to an electric motor, and the track, available in various lengths and made from either aluminum or plastic.  To operate a track saw, the user needs to adjust the blade’s position along the track before turning on the power switch. Once powered on, the blade can be guided along the track’s length while making controlled and clean cut lines.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Track Saw

    Weight

The saw’s weight will determine how easily it can be transported from one workspace to another and its overall ergonomics. On the other hand, bulkiness can be an issue if there is limited space to work with. In such cases, choosing a lighter and more compact model could be beneficial.

    Motor power and speed

It is usually advisable to opt for a motor with high power and speed to ensure that the tool can make clean cuts through harder materials. It is also worth checking what type of motor it has— brushless motors are usually more efficient than brush motors.

    Type of blade

Two types of blades are typically used in track saws: Tungsten carbide-tipped blades and diamond-coated blades. Tungsten carbide-tipped blades are cheaper but less durable, while diamond-coated blades are more expensive but will last longer and provide better results.

    Cutting depth capacity

The higher the cutting depth capacity, the thicker materials it can accommodate. Depending on the type of projects you will typically be carrying out, selecting a model with an appropriate cutting-depth capacity could prove crucial in ensuring efficient use of time and resources.

    Ergonomic design and comfort

Track saws tend to have long handles, which provides users with improved control over their movements. But, some models may have handles that cause user fatigue or strain after prolonged use due to their weight or lack of cushioning on the grip surface. In this case, it would be wise to pay attention to ergonomic designs and ensure maximum comfort is achieved during operation.

    Dust collection system

Many modern track saw models come with an integrated dust collection system. These can range from small bags that collect debris or built-in vacuum systems, which are much more effective at containing dust particles during operation. If you plan on working in particularly dusty environments, it may be worth investing in one with such features for improved safety and ease of maintenance afterward.

    Track Saw Vs. Circular Saw

When comparing these two tools, a few key differences become evident. First, a track saw is designed specifically for making straight cuts, while a circular saw can only make curved ones since its design limits it to cutting up to 45-degree angles at most times. Also, due to its ability to attach firmly to tracks, a track saw provides more stability while cutting than typical circular saw blades. Plus, due to its design and specialized blades with tracking features, track saws tend to be quieter than their circular counterparts during operation.

Precautions for Using a Track Saw

Before using any circular saw, it is crucial to wear protective eye gear and gloves or other appropriate clothing items for safety purposes. Plus, when working with a track saw, it is essential to use both hands when controlling the power switch— this will reduce the chances of kickback or injury from an accidental shift in direction. Also, ensure that all children are kept from the operating area, as these tools can cause serious injury if mishandled or used without proper care.
    Pros
    • Easier and faster setup
    • More accurate cuts
    • Quieter motor compared to other saws
    • Cleaner cuts with rubber track edge
    Cons
    • Costly replacement blades required for optimal performance
