Using Tape to Mark Dovetails

By: Woodsmith Readers
Making the first half of the joint is simple enough with a bevel gauge or dovetail jig, but its mate needs to be marked directly. That's where the tape comes in.

Tape Marks the Spot

An accurate layout is vital when it comes to dovetails. Making the first half of the joint is simple enough with a bevel gauge or dovetail jig, but its mate needs to be marked directly. I begin with a strip of painter’s tape across the end of the mating board. Scribing the layout with my marking knife cuts the tape, and after peeling off the sections beneath the tails, I’m left with perfect indicators of where the waste is.
