Make a Simple Center Finder for Woodturning
When you're preparing a blank for the lathe, one of the first steps is locating its center. Accurate layout makes it easier to position the blank between centers or prepare it for mounting.
If you do a lot of woodturning, having a quick, reliable way to mark the center can save time.
This shop-made woodturning center finder is about as simple as it gets. All you need are two metal angle braces and a little cyanoacrylate (CA) glue.
Assemble the Center Finder
The tool consists of two metal angle braces glued together in a precise arrangement.
The important part is getting the braces aligned correctly. To do this, I use a 45° drafting square as an assembly guide.
Position the braces so the outside edge of the upper brace lines up with the inside and outside corners of the lower brace, as shown in the photo.
Once everything is aligned, apply a small amount of CA glue where the braces meet.
Use locking pliers to hold the pieces securely while the adhesive cures. Follow the glue manufacturer's instructions for surface preparation and curing time.
Accurate alignment is essential because the angled reference edge determines where the centerline will be marked.
Find the Center of a Turning Blank
To use the center finder, place the lower angle brace against two adjacent sides of a square turning blank.
The angled edge of the upper brace provides a reference for drawing a diagonal line across the end of the blank.
Mark the line with a sharp pencil, then reposition the center finder against another pair of adjacent sides and draw a second line.
The intersection of the two lines identifies the center of the blank.
For round or irregular blanks, use an appropriate center-finding method that matches the shape of the stock.
A Handy Addition to Your Turning Tools
A center finder doesn't need to be complicated to be useful.
This simple version takes very little time to assemble, uses inexpensive hardware, and is compact enough to keep near your lathe.
