Flatten Box Bottoms

I was making some canisters from tree branches and needed a way to flatten the bottom. My technique derives from metalworking.

I scribbled on a flat piece of plywood with a soft pencil. After rubbing the canister across the plywood a few times, I checked the bottom. Dark marks revealed the high spots. I planed them off with a block plane, bracing the canister in the open jaws of my face vise. Repeat the process until you get uniform marks across the bottom of the project. By the way, this technique works just as well with turned items and conventional boxes. -Harold Ebbletrap Potter, Wisconsin
