Shop-Made Hand Plane Blade Protector
A sharp hand plane blade is essential for getting clean, smooth results. But that finely honed cutting edge can be damaged if the plane is set down on a hard surface or stored carelessly.
I wanted a simple way to protect my hand plane blade without having to retract it every time I put the plane away.
The solution was this easy-to-build wooden saddle. It fits over the sole of the plane, protecting the cutting edge while allowing me to leave the blade at its normal setting.
Build a Simple Wooden Plane Saddle
The saddle is essentially a small wooden platform that fits against the bottom of the hand plane.
Start by making a base sized to fit your plane. Then glue a pair of narrow runners along the sides to keep the saddle aligned with the plane's body.
I routed a small cove along the top edges of the runners. This provides a comfortable grip when removing the saddle.
Add Magnetic Strips to Protect the Blade
The key to the design is a pair of adhesive-backed magnetic strips.
These attach to the saddle and hold it against the metal sole of the plane.
The strips also provide clearance between the plane's sole and the wooden base, preventing the cutting edge from contacting the saddle.
Before using the protector, check that the blade has enough clearance at its normal cutting setting.
The magnetic strips keep the saddle in place when the plane isn't being used, while making it easy to remove when you're ready to get back to work.
It's a quick, inexpensive shop project that helps protect a carefully sharpened blade.
