Build a Space-Saving Fold-Down Workshop Table
Every woodworker could use a little more workspace. Whether you're sketching out a project, laying out parts, or tackling a small assembly, having an extra work surface is always handy.
But in a small workshop, finding room for another table or workbench isn't always possible.
That's what makes this wall-mounted fold-down work table such a practical solution. It provides a sturdy surface for light woodworking tasks, and when you're finished, the tabletop folds against the wall to free up valuable floor space.
Best of all, you can build it using plywood, hardboard, and a few pieces of hardware.
Build the Plywood Tabletop
The tabletop starts with a plywood panel covered with a layer of hardboard. The plywood provides strength and rigidity, while the hardboard creates a smooth, durable work surface.
To make the top, cut the plywood panel to size and glue on an oversized piece of hardboard. Once the glue dries, trim the hardboard flush with the plywood edges.
Next, wrap the tabletop with edging made from two layers of plywood.
Cut centered grooves in the edging pieces to fit around the tabletop, miter the corners, and glue the edging in place.
The edging gives the tabletop a finished appearance and provides a solid location for attaching the hardware.
Install a threaded insert in each end of the tabletop. These accept the studded knobs that connect the support legs.
Make the Slotted Support Legs
The table uses two plywood legs to support the front edge of the work surface.
Each leg has a long slot that allows it to slide and pivot as the tabletop is raised or lowered.
You can cut the slots using a jig saw or router. Then miter the ends of the legs and round over the corners as shown in the drawing.
The upper end of each leg attaches to the tabletop with a studded knob that passes through the slot and threads into the insert.
At the bottom, each leg fits into an angled pocket in a wall-mounted support block.
This arrangement supports the tabletop when it's open while allowing the legs to move out of the way when the table is folded.
Install the Fold-Down Table on the Wall
The tabletop attaches to a horizontal wall cleat with hinges.
Start by fastening the hinges to the underside of the wall cleat and the back edging of the tabletop.
Position the assembly against the workshop wall, level the cleat, and fasten it securely into the wall studs.
Next, attach the support legs using the studded knobs and slots.
With a helper holding the tabletop level, swing the legs into their supporting positions to determine where the lower mounting blocks should be installed.
Fasten the blocks securely to the wall framing, making sure the angled pockets properly support the ends of the legs.
Once everything is installed, check that the legs seat firmly in their pockets and the tabletop folds smoothly against the wall.
WOODSMITH TIP: Make Sure the Supports Are Secure. A wall-mounted work table is only as strong as its mounting hardware and supporting structure. Fasten the cleat and leg blocks securely into wall framing, and make sure the legs are fully seated before using the table.
This design is intended for light woodworking, layout, and similar tasks rather than heavy pounding or supporting large machinery.
Extra Workspace When You Need It
The biggest advantage of this fold-down workshop table is that it doesn't permanently occupy valuable floor space.
Raise the tabletop, position the support legs, and you have an additional work surface for measuring, drawing, organizing parts, or working on smaller projects.
When you're finished, fold the table against the wall and reclaim the space for other shop activities.
For a small garage workshop or compact woodworking shop, it's a simple project that makes the space you already have more versatile.
