Sanding Disc Storage Cabinet: A Simple Wall-Mounted Organizer
If you use a random orbital sander regularly, you probably have a growing collection of sanding discs in different grits. Keeping them organized can be a challenge, especially when they end up scattered around the shop or buried in a drawer.
That's exactly the problem I was having. My sanding discs always seemed to end up loose in the bottom of a workbench drawer. Finding the grit I needed meant sorting through the pile.
To solve the problem, I built this simple wall-mounted sanding disc storage cabinet. It keeps my discs organized, makes them easy to grab, and frees up valuable drawer space.
Build a Simple Plywood Storage Cabinet
The cabinet is essentially a plywood box with a center divider and a series of slots for removable sanding disc trays.
I used basic rabbet and dado joinery to assemble the case. This keeps the construction straightforward while creating a sturdy cabinet.
The sides and center divider have matching dadoes that support the trays and allow them to slide in and out.
This arrangement makes it easy to keep different sanding grits separated. Instead of rummaging through a drawer, I can pull out the tray I need and grab a disc.
Shallow grooves in the top, bottom, and sides hold a hardboard back, which helps complete the case.
Make Removable Sanding Disc Trays
The removable trays are what make this storage cabinet especially convenient.
And they're surprisingly simple to make.
Each tray consists of a short section of PVC pipe epoxied to a square hardboard base.
The PVC forms a circular holder for the sanding discs, while the hardboard base slides into the dadoes in the cabinet.
Make as many trays as you need to organize your collection of sanding discs.
You can dedicate individual trays to different grits, making it easier to find the right abrasive for each stage of sanding.
Since the trays are removable, you can also take one directly to your workbench or sanding station.
Hang the Cabinet with a Beveled Cleat
To keep the organizer out of the way but close at hand, I designed it to hang on the wall.
A beveled wooden cleat attached to the back of the cabinet mates with a corresponding cleat mounted on the wall.
This style of mounting makes the cabinet easy to install and allows you to remove it if you decide to rearrange your workshop.
Just make sure the wall cleat is securely fastened to suitable framing or other appropriate supports.
Keep Sanding Supplies Organized and Within Reach
One of the advantages of this design is that it doesn't require much shop space.
By storing the sanding discs vertically on the wall, you can free up a drawer or shelf for other tools and supplies.
The removable trays make it easy to organize discs by grit, while the compact plywood case keeps everything together.
It's a simple storage solution that makes sanding a little more convenient.
And since the cabinet is built from plywood, hardboard, and short pieces of PVC pipe, it's also an inexpensive project you can make from materials you may already have around the shop.
