How to Match Wood Stain for Furniture Repairs

By: Phil Huber
Match wood stain touch-up markers with a simple acetate color guide. This quick trick takes the guesswork out of repairing scratches and finish flaws.

How to Match Wood Stain for Furniture Touch-Ups

Scratches, scuffs, and small finish blemishes are inevitable on wood furniture. Fortunately, stain touch-up markers offer a quick and easy way to disguise minor damage without refinishing the entire piece. The challenge is finding a color that matches the existing finish.

A marker labeled "Cherry" might seem like the obvious choice for cherry furniture, but stain names don't always correspond to the actual color of the finished wood. This simple shop trick makes choosing the right color much easier.

Make a Wood Stain Color Matching Guide

Instead of testing several stain markers directly on your project, create a reusable color guide using a sheet of clear acetate.

Apply a sample of each stain marker to the acetate, leaving enough space between colors to compare them easily. Then label each sample with the marker's color name.

Once the samples have dried, you'll have a handy reference for comparing different stain colors against finished wood surfaces.

Find the Best Stain Marker Match

To find the closest match, simply lay the clear acetate sheet over the area you want to repair. Because the acetate is transparent, you can compare the stain colors directly against the existing finish.

You may be surprised by the results. For example, an "Early American" stain marker might match a cherry finish better than one labeled "Cherry."

Once you've identified the closest color, test the marker in an inconspicuous area before applying it to the blemish. This helps confirm that the color blends with the surrounding finish.

An Easy Fix for Furniture Finish Flaws

This simple acetate color guide takes much of the guesswork out of matching stain touch-up markers. It's inexpensive, easy to make, and can be reused whenever you need to disguise a scratch or minor finish blemish.

Keep it with your finishing supplies, and you'll have a quick reference ready for your next furniture touch-up.
