Router Plate Lift

When using my router table, it’s inconvenient to reach under the table and push the router and insert plate up whenever I change bits. I wanted to be able to do everything from the top of the router table.

Rather than drill finger holes in the insert plate to lift the router out, I designed the system shown in the photo. It operates like a cam, allowing me to raise the plate without having to bend over and reach under the table.

A lever on the outside of the table is attached by a threaded rod to a cam located just inside the router opening. A wood block mounted to the underside of the table top supports the threaded rod and cam.

I located the lever and the cam just below the lower surface of the table top. When the router is being used, the cam and lever stay out of the way. But when it’s time to change bits, you simply rotate the lever, which lifts the plate about 3⁄4" above the table top. This is enough to allow you to get your fingers under the plate and lift it out. And when I replace the router, I can gently lower it back into the top using the lever, rather than dropping it into place. -Andrew Volk Granite Bay, California exploded view diagram of DIY Router Plate Lift for router table
