How to Fold a Band Saw Blade in 4 Easy Steps
If you've ever tried to fold a band saw blade for storage, you know it can feel a little like wrestling an alligator. The blade twists, springs back, and never seems to go where you want it.
But once you understand the technique, coiling a band saw blade is surprisingly simple.
There are several ways to fold a band saw blade, but the method I prefer uses a controlled twisting motion to form three compact loops. It's easy to learn, works with many common woodworking band saw blades, and makes storing spare blades much more convenient.
Before you begin, put on a pair of sturdy leather gloves and safety glasses. The teeth are sharp, and the blade is under spring tension, so work slowly and keep it under control throughout the process.
Step 1: Hold the Band Saw Blade Correctly
Start by holding the blade upright in front of you, with the teeth pointing away from your body.
Position your hands on the upper portion of the blade.
Your right thumb should be behind the blade, while your left thumb rests in front of it.
This opposing grip is important because it allows you to twist the blade in two different directions at the same time.
Keep a firm but comfortable grip, and make sure you have plenty of clear space around you.
Step 2: Twist Your Wrists in Opposite Directions
Now comes the key to the technique.
While holding the blade securely, slowly rotate your wrists in opposite directions.
- Right hand: Rotate your wrist downward.
- Left hand: Rotate your wrist upward.
As you do this, the blade will begin to form a double twist.
You don't need to force the blade into position. The spring tension in the steel will help it take shape as you continue the motion.
Keep the movement controlled and avoid sudden twisting.
Step 3: Bring Your Hands Together to Form the Coils
While continuing the twisting motion, gradually bring your hands toward each other.
You'll notice the blade beginning to coil on its own.
Rather than trying to bend each loop individually, allow the blade to follow its natural curve while maintaining control with both hands.
As the loops form, guide them together into a compact bundle.
The important thing is to work slowly and let the blade fold naturally instead of forcing it.
Step 4: Secure the Three Loops for Storage
Once the blade has folded, you'll have three smaller loops.
Hold the loops together with both hands and adjust them until they form a neat, even circle.
Then secure the coiled blade with a couple of twist ties or pieces of tape.
I like to fasten the loops in at least two places so they can't shift or spring apart during storage.
Now the blade is compact enough to hang on a hook or store with your other spare band saw blades.
How to Unfold a Band Saw Blade Safely
Folding a band saw blade is only half the job. You also need to be careful when opening it again.
A coiled blade stores spring tension, and releasing it too quickly can cause the loops to snap open unexpectedly.
Wear leather gloves and safety glasses, and keep the blade away from your face and body.
Hold the coils securely while removing the ties. Then allow the loops to open gradually in a clear area, keeping control of the blade throughout the process.
Never toss a coiled blade into the air or let it spring open on its own.
Make Band Saw Blade Storage Easier
Once you've practiced this technique a few times, folding a band saw blade becomes a quick, routine task.
The trick is remembering the three basic motions: hold the blade with opposing thumb positions, twist your wrists in opposite directions, and bring your hands together as the loops form.
With a little practice and careful handling, you'll be able to coil your spare band saw blades neatly and keep them organized until the next time you need them.
