If you're short on space in your woodworking shop, finding convenient and compact tool storage is essential. That’s exactly the challenge I faced when I built a router bit storage rack from a solid wood blank and mounted it to the outside of my router table base.
At first, the setup worked — until I kept snagging my pant leg or shop apron on the rack every time I walked by in my cramped shop. I needed a better solution that kept my router bits organized but also out of the way.
The solution came during a trip to the hardware store. Instead of keeping the bit rack fixed to the outside of the table, I mounted it on a full-extension drawer slide. Then, I installed the entire assembly beneath my router table, creating a hidden, slide-out router bit storage rack.
Now, whenever I need a bit, I simply pull out the rack, select the one I need, and slide it back into place. It’s efficient, easily accessible, and best of all — no more snagged pants!
You can easily adapt this design to fit your own router bit collection. Layout and drill holes in the wooden blank to match the sizes and shapes of your bits. A beveled front edge adds a finishing touch and provides better visibility and access to each bit.
