Low-Cost Workbench Upgrade: Adjustable Storage and Board Support
A good workbench needs plenty of uninterrupted space for laying out parts, assembling projects, and working with hand tools. That's one reason I've never been a big fan of building a tool well into the benchtop. While having tools close at hand is convenient, I prefer keeping the entire work surface flat and available.
Fortunately, there's an easy way to add storage to a workbench without giving up any room on top.
With a few inexpensive shelf standards and adjustable brackets, you can turn the legs of your workbench into a versatile storage system. And with one simple modification, the same hardware becomes a handy board jack for supporting long workpieces during edge planing.
It's an easy upgrade that makes your workbench more useful without taking up additional floor space.
Add Adjustable Tool Storage to Your Workbench
The storage system starts with short lengths of metal shelf standard, the slotted tracks commonly used for adjustable shelving.
Attach a section of shelf standard to each of the four workbench legs, making sure the tracks are securely fastened and positioned so they won't interfere with the bench vise or other accessories.
Then add adjustable shelf brackets wherever you need support.
The brackets can hold small, shop-made storage bins for hand tools, layout equipment, or other accessories you want within easy reach.
The biggest advantage is flexibility. You can move the brackets up or down to accommodate different storage bins or rearrange the setup as your needs change.
And since everything mounts to the bench legs, the top remains completely clear.
Turn a Shelf Bracket into a Workbench Board Jack
The shelf standards can do more than hold tools. They also provide a convenient way to support long boards when you're working at the bench.
For example, when edge planing a long board, it's easy to secure one end in the bench vise. But the opposite end often needs additional support to keep the workpiece steady.
A simple workbench board jack solves the problem.
To make one, attach a piece of hardwood to the top of a shelf bracket. The hardwood creates a broader support surface for the workpiece and helps prevent the metal bracket from marring the wood.
Insert the modified bracket into the shelf standard at the appropriate height.
With one end of the board held in the vise and the other resting on the bracket, you have a simple, adjustable support for edge planing.
The slotted shelf standard makes it easy to change the support height for different workpieces.
A Simple Workbench Upgrade with Multiple Uses
One of the best things about this system is that the same inexpensive hardware serves several purposes.
Use the brackets to support tool bins when you need extra storage. Then move a bracket into position whenever you need a third hand to hold a long board.
For best results, choose sturdy shelf standards and brackets rated for the loads they'll carry. Fasten the standards securely to the bench legs, and make sure the board jack supports the workpiece without allowing it to slip or tip.
It's a simple way to make your workbench more versatile while keeping the top clear for woodworking.
And because the brackets are adjustable and removable, you can customize the arrangement to suit the way you work.
