Woodworking Assembly Jigs for Easier Glue-Ups

By: Phil Huber
Make woodworking assembly easier with two simple shop-made jigs that hold parts in place, keep frames square, and simplify tricky glue-ups.

Easy Woodworking Assembly Jigs for Square, Accurate Glue-Ups

Assembling a woodworking project can sometimes be more challenging than cutting the parts. Holding pieces in position, keeping everything square, and managing clamps and fasteners often requires an extra set of hands.

Fortunately, a couple of simple shop-made assembly jigs can make the process much easier. These handy helpers keep parts aligned and square, allowing you to focus on fastening and gluing the project together.

Hold Parts in Position with an Assembly Jig

When assembling identical frames, a simple positioning jig can save time and improve accuracy.

The jig holds the legs and rails in their proper locations, with a spacer establishing consistent spacing between the rails. Once the parts are positioned, they can be secured with pocket screws without having to juggle multiple pieces.

This approach is especially useful when building several matching frames. Each assembly comes out consistent, making the final project easier to put together.

Keep Assemblies Square with Plywood Squaring Jigs

Larger assemblies present another challenge: keeping everything square while applying glue and tightening clamps.

A pair of plywood squaring forms provides a simple solution. These right-angle helpers fit inside the assembly and are clamped in place to hold the adjoining frames at 90°.

For larger projects, band clamps can draw the assembly together while the squaring forms help maintain alignment.

Before applying glue, it's a good idea to dry-fit and clamp the entire assembly. This allows you to check the fit, adjust the clamps, and make sure everything is square before the glue starts setting.

Make Your Next Woodworking Glue-Up Easier

You don't need complicated equipment to simplify project assembly. A basic positioning jig and a couple of plywood squaring forms can eliminate much of the frustration of holding parts together.

These simple shop-made helpers are easy to adapt to different projects and can make your next glue-up faster, more accurate, and less stressful.
