A good sanding block makes smoothing wood surfaces easier and more consistent. But many sanding blocks have two drawbacks: They're too small to grip comfortably, and changing worn sandpaper can be a hassle.
To solve both problems, I built this DIY sanding block with a comfortable hand grip and a clever clamping mechanism.
The secret is a small toggle clamp that secures the sandpaper between two plywood surfaces. When it's time to change the paper, simply release the clamp, replace the sheet, and snap everything back together.

Build a Sanding Block from Three Layers of Plywood
This shop-made sanding block consists of three layers of plywood that work together to hold the sandpaper securely.
The bottom layer serves as the base. It provides the flat sanding surface and supports the toggle clamp.
The middle layer acts as a clamping block, while the top layer forms the hand grip.
The middle and top pieces are joined together with screws to create the upper assembly.
Both pieces have a cutout in the center to provide clearance for the toggle clamp.
The middle clamping block also includes a small shelf that gives the head of the toggle clamp a solid surface to press against.
This arrangement allows the clamp to pull the upper assembly against the base, holding the sandpaper securely between them.
Add a Toggle Clamp for Quick Sandpaper Changes
The toggle clamp is what makes this sanding block so convenient.
Instead of wrapping sandpaper around a block and fastening it with screws or adhesive, the paper is held in place by the clamping pressure between the plywood pieces.
When the toggle clamp is engaged, it pulls the two sections together and sandwiches the sandpaper securely.
When the paper wears out, release the clamp to separate the sections.
Remove the old sandpaper, position a fresh piece, and engage the clamp again.
There's no adhesive to scrape off or hardware to remove.
Shape the Handle for a Comfortable Grip
Another advantage of this design is the large, comfortable hand grip.
The top plywood piece can be shaped to fit your hand, making it easier to maintain control while sanding.
You can round over the edges and refine the shape to suit your preferences.
