Sanding Block Upgrade

By: Phil Huber
Another use for random orbit sanding discs. A handy round block sander for shop use.

Orbital sanders are a great addition to the shop. But buying both disk sandpaper for the sander and sheet sandpaper for a sanding block is expensive. I solved the problem by creating this sanding block that accepts hook and loop disk sandpaper.

It’s made from a few scraps of plywood I had on hand in the shop. The handle is cut and shaped to fit my hand. The base is a 5"-dia. disk of plywood with a piece of hook and loop material glued to the bottom. The sandpaper disks attach easily to the sanding disk. And I can change paper quickly. An added benefit is more comfortable sanding with a shaped handle.
