Build an Overhead Bar Clamp Storage Rack
Finding a good place to store bar clamps can be a challenge, especially in a small woodworking shop. They tend to end up hanging on walls, piled on shelves, or tucked into whatever space is available.
One way to get them organized is to look up. The unused space above your workshop can be the perfect spot for a shop-made overhead bar clamp rack.
This simple design uses short lengths of PVC pipe to create individual compartments for your clamps, keeping them organized by size and easy to access.
PVC Pipe Keeps Clamps Organized
The key to this rack is a series of PVC pipe sections arranged side by side.
Each pipe serves as a separate holder for a bar clamp. By arranging the pipes in a row, you can keep different clamp lengths organized and quickly find the one you need.
The pipes are held securely between a pair of wooden rails, creating a compact storage rack that mounts to the ceiling joists.
Build the Overhead Clamp Rack
Start with 2x4 lumber for the rails. Use a hole saw to bore a series of holes sized to fit your PVC pipe.
Once the holes are drilled, rip the rails in half through the holes. This creates matching halves that fit around the pipe sections.
Position the PVC pipes between the rails, then screw the rail halves back together to grip the pipes securely.
Next, attach the rail assembly to a pair of plywood end pieces. These provide the mounting points for securing the rack to the ceiling joists.
After installing the rack, simply slide your bar clamps into the individual PVC compartments.
WOODSMITH TIP: Plan for Secure Overhead Storage. Mount the rack directly to structural ceiling joists using fasteners appropriate for the combined weight of the rack and clamps. Make sure the pipe openings fit your clamps securely, and position the rack where stored clamps won't interfere with lighting, doors, or overhead work.
