It’s About Time... to Build a Clock!

By: Chris Fitch, Logan Wittmer & Phil Huber
Learn how to build three unique clocks from The Woodsmith Shop—a Craftsman mantel clock, a Stickley-inspired design, and a modern sunburst wall clock. Perfect weekend woodworking projects that blend style, precision, and craftsmanship.

Building a clock is one of those projects that combines woodworking skill, design creativity, and a rewarding sense of accomplishment. In this episode of The Woodsmith Shop (Season 16, Episode 12: Time for Clocks), the team takes on three distinct clock designs that showcase a wide range of techniques and styles. Whether you prefer the refined look of classic Craftsman furniture, the solid details of a Stickley mantel clock, or the bold geometry of mid-century design, there’s a project here to inspire you.

The Craftsman-Style Mantel Clock. Logan starts things off with a Craftsman-style clock that blends traditional Arts & Crafts design with approachable construction. Built from white oak and featuring a maple face, this clock highlights the beauty of simple joinery and honest materials. A handmade ceramic tile from Motawi Tileworks completes the design, adding an authentic touch of early 20th-century craftsmanship. The clean lines, rich finish, and reliable quartz movement make this clock both timeless and practical—perfect for a weekend build.

The Stickley Mantel Clock. Next, Phil demonstrates how to build a Stickley-inspired mantel clock, a project rich with detail and character. While the design may look simple at first glance, closer inspection reveals classic Stickley elements: exposed box joints, chamfered through-tenons, and a distinctive twelve-sided clock face. A small leaded-glass window allows a view of the pendulum inside, adding another layer of craftsmanship. The result is a piece that pays tribute to Gustav Stickley’s work while offering an enjoyable woodworking challenge.

The Sunburst Wall Clock. Finally, Chris puts a modern spin on a mid-century classic with his sunburst wall clock. This design is a study in geometry and proportion, drawing inspiration from designers like George Nelson and the Howard Miller Clock Company. Combining sharp angles, clean curves, and contrasting materials, the clock captures the essence of mid-century style. It’s a great project for experimenting with layout, precision, and visual balance—all in a compact format that’s ideal for a home workshop.

Learn, Build, and Display. Each of these clocks teaches a different woodworking lesson, from cutting precise joints to mastering finish techniques. And because they’re small in scale, they’re approachable projects that can be completed in a weekend or two. Whether you’re building for yourself or creating a handmade gift, these clocks offer both beauty and craftsmanship.
