Drill Bit Storage Center: A Smarter Way to Organize Your Shop

By: John Doyle
Organize drill bits, accessories, and drill press tools with this customizable storage center featuring removable holders, adjustable shelves, and drawers.

A well-organized workshop makes every project more enjoyable. When drill bits, countersinks, chuck keys, and drill press accessories all have a dedicated home, you spend less time searching and more time building. That's the idea behind the Drill Bit Storage Center designed by Woodsmith project designer Dennis Volz.

In the video below, Dennis takes a closer look at this versatile shop storage project and explains how thoughtful organization can improve efficiency in any woodworking shop.

Designed to mount on the wall near a drill press, the Drill Bit Storage Center combines a spacious upper cabinet with a flexible lower drawer chest. The result is a compact storage system capable of holding everything from drill bit sets and Forstner bits to setup tools, accessories, and miscellaneous shop supplies.

One of the most unique features of the project is its customizable drill bit holders. Rather than locking you into a fixed arrangement, the holders can be sized to fit the bits and accessories you already own. They hang on a simple French cleat system, making it easy to rearrange the cabinet as your collection grows. Better yet, individual holders can be lifted out and carried directly to the drill press, keeping the tools you need close at hand while you work.

The cabinet also incorporates magnetic accessory cleats that provide convenient storage for metal items that often get misplaced. Chuck keys, drill stops, small setup tools, and other accessories stay visible and easy to access.

Inside the cabinet, adjustable shelves provide additional storage flexibility. Whether you're organizing measuring tools, sanding accessories, or specialty drilling equipment, the layout can be adapted to suit your needs. The deep doors offer even more storage space, turning areas that are often wasted into highly functional organization zones.

The lower chest continues the theme of customization. Its design allows for multiple drawer sizes, giving you the freedom to create storage that fits your shop rather than forcing your tools into a predetermined arrangement. Larger drawers can hold bulky accessories while smaller drawers are perfect for organizing hardware, replacement parts, and specialty tools.

Throughout the video, Dennis shares practical shop organization ideas that can help woodworkers of any skill level. The project reflects a simple philosophy: tools should be easy to find, easy to access, and easy to put away. When everything has a designated location, shop work becomes faster, safer, and more enjoyable.

If you're looking for a woodworking project that delivers long-term value every time you step into the shop, the Drill Bit Storage Center is an excellent choice. Its adaptable design allows it to evolve alongside your tool collection, making it a storage solution you'll appreciate for years to come.
