Build an Adjustable Pull Saw Miter Box — Part 1: Getting Started

By: Phil Huber
Follow along as I begin building an Adjustable Pull Saw Miter Box that makes cutting small parts safer and more accurate. In Part 1, I cover the design, build the base, and share a few shop tips that will help you get professional results.

When I need to cut small moldings, picture frame parts, or delicate trim, I don't like relying on the table saw. Tiny workpieces can be difficult to control, and accuracy isn't always easy to achieve. That's why I built this Adjustable Pull Saw Miter Box. It gives me clean, repeatable cuts using a Japanese pull saw while making the entire process safer and more enjoyable.

In Part 1 of this build, I walk through the overall design and explain how the rotating turntable, adjustable fence, and saw guide system work together to produce accurate miters and crosscuts. Then it's time to start building.

I'll show you how I lay out and construct the plywood base, along with one of my favorite bandsaw tricks for cutting a perfectly round turntable. I also share a simple drill press technique that makes installing threaded inserts quick and accurate when attaching the fence.

By the end of this video, the foundation of the jig is complete and ready for the precision features that bring everything together. Whether you enjoy building picture frames, decorative moldings, small boxes, or fine furniture, this is a shop jig you'll find yourself reaching for again and again.

In Part 2, I'll finish the jig by adding the indexing system, adjustable angle lock, and precision saw guide blocks before putting the completed miter box to work.
