A miter saw is one of the handiest tools for quickly cutting boards to length, but controlling the sawdust it creates can be a challenge. The small dust bag or collection port supplied with many saws may still allow a lot of dust to escape around the blade.
Instead of trying to capture all that dust directly at the saw, this clever shop solution takes a different approach: Contain the sawdust inside a shelter and collect it from there.

Create a Miter Saw Dust Shelter
The heart of this setup is a small pop-up spray finishing shelter. A similar pop-up enclosure, such as a play tent, could also work. The shelter sits on a pair of sawhorses with the miter saw positioned inside the opening. Its enclosed sides and back help contain the sawdust thrown from the blade instead of allowing it to spread throughout the shop. This doesn't require permanently modifying the miter saw, and the pop-up design makes the shelter easy to set up when it's needed.
Add a Dust Collection Port
Containing the dust is only half the solution. A dust collection fitting installed near the bottom of the shelter connects the enclosure to a dust collector.
The fitting is screwed to a layer of plywood, which provides a solid mounting surface and helps seal the connection to the fabric shelter.
Connect the fitting to your dust collector before making cuts.
How the Dust Collection Setup Works
With the shelter positioned on the sawhorses, place the miter saw inside the opening and connect the collection hose. Turn on the dust collector before using the saw. As the miter saw throws sawdust behind and around the blade, the enclosure helps contain the debris. The fitting at the bottom provides a collection point where much of that dust can be drawn away by the dust collector. It's a simple solution for a tool that's notoriously difficult to contain with a small collection port alone.
Woodsmith Tip: Leave enough room around the saw for its full range of motion. Before making a cut, check that the blade guard, saw head, sliding mechanism, and workpiece can move freely without contacting the shelter or dust hose.
A Simple Solution for Miter Saw Dust
You don't necessarily need an elaborate permanent miter saw station to improve dust collection. By combining a lightweight pop-up shelter with a dust collector, you can create a portable miter saw dust collection enclosure that helps keep sawdust from spreading throughout the shop. When you're finished, the setup can be taken down and stored until the next time you need it.
