Improved Threaded Insert Installation

By: John Doyle
I have a number of shop-made jigs where I've used threaded inserts. They make pieces easily removable or adjustable, but they’re not always easy to install perfectly square on the edge of a piece of plywood. However, this handy jig makes installing them a breeze.

This threaded insert installation jig is simple. The notched body keeps the insert perpendicular to the workpiece while the fence keeps it centered, and a spring-loaded hex bolt helps drive the insert in place. The hex bolt passes through a centered hole in the body. The bottom is counterbored to make room for a spacer. A spring presses between the spacer and a nut, providing even downward pressure.

To use the jig, first drill a hole in the workpiece for the insert. Slip a washer over the bolt and thread on the insert. Clamp the jig onto the workpiece. Turning the bolt with a ratchet will then drive the insert into place.
