Upgrade Your Planer Cart With Handy, Built-in Features!

By: Phil Huber
This easy-to-build cart turns a small benchtop planer into a compact workstation with some hidden, built-in features that will make planing boards more convenient.

You can get the complete step-by-step plans to build this Planer Cart from WoodsmithPlans.com.

My bench-top planer is a workhorse in the shop. But, if I'm planing a lot of stock, it can be a juggling act to keep everything organized and stacked so it doesn't fall to the floor as I'm working. This planer cart not only is the perfect mobile base for your planer, but it also has a few features that make using your planer a little easier.

As you can see in the photo above that there is a nice open space below the planer deck and a large drawer for storage, but we've also added an integrated drop-leaf shelf that adds an extra area to set workpieces as you're planing.

As a bonus, there’s a built-in auxiliary table for planing thin stock as seen in the photo above. It fits over the bed of the planer and a cleat on the infeed side hooks it in place. The table serves two purposes. The cutterhead on some planers can’t be lowered enough to plane stock less than 1⁄4". The table raises the workpiece for the cutterhead to engage the piece. The table’s other job is to create a smooth, continuous surface for thin stock to slide on. This way, it can’t catch and spoil the cut. There is a hardwood cleat glued to the back face of the table that hooks over the planer's infeed wing, so it won’t shift in use. The cleat also has a matching bevel to the cleat on the cart, so it has a place to for easy storage and quick access.

This planer cart design is a great way to get more out of your planer footprint without taking up any more valuable space in your workshop.
