Add Extra Workspace with a Router Table Auxiliary Top
In a small woodworking shop, every square foot of workspace counts. And when my router table isn't being used for routing, there's no reason it can't serve another purpose.
To make better use of that space, I built a simple removable auxiliary top that fits over my router table. It's made from MDF and hardwood, so it's inexpensive and easy to build.
The result is a convenient extra worksurface for laying out parts, organizing tools, or handling light assembly tasks.
Build the Auxiliary Router Table Top
The auxiliary top consists of an MDF panel and three hardwood frame pieces. Rabbets in the frame allow the assembly to fit over the router table.
Start by measuring the width of your router table. Then measure the depth with the router table fence pushed all the way back. You can also remove the fence if you prefer.
To determine the size of the auxiliary top, add 3⁄8" to the depth and 3⁄4" to the width to account for the rabbets in the frame pieces.
Once the parts are cut and assembled, the auxiliary top simply slides over the router table.
There's no complicated mounting hardware, and the top can be removed whenever you're ready to use the router again.
WOODSMITH TIP: Check the Fit. Before assembling the top, make sure the frame will clear your router table's fence and any other accessories. The auxiliary top should fit securely without forcing it into place.
Make Better Use of Your Shop Space
This simple addition turns an otherwise unused router table into a handy temporary workstation.
When you need the router, just lift off the auxiliary top and set it aside. When you're finished routing, slide the top back into place.
It's an easy way to add usable workspace without adding another workbench — especially valuable when shop space is limited.
