One-Touch Dust Collection with a Smart Power Strip
Connecting a shop vacuum to a power tool is a great way to keep dust under control. But having to turn on the tool and then reach down to switch on the vacuum gets old in a hurry.
I wanted a simpler solution without buying a dedicated tool-actuated vacuum. That's when I discovered a master-controlled power strip at my local home center.
These power strips are designed to switch on accessories automatically when a primary device is turned on. And that same feature can be handy in the woodworking shop.
How the Automatic Vacuum Switch Works
A master-controlled power strip has two types of outlets: a master outlet and one or more master-controlled outlets.
The master outlet senses when the connected device is operating. When that device turns on, the power strip supplies electricity to the controlled outlets.
To use this setup for dust collection, plug your power tool into the master outlet and your shop vacuum into a master-controlled outlet.
Now, when you start the tool, the power strip senses the electrical load and switches on the vacuum automatically.
When you turn off the tool, the controlled outlet switches off as well, shutting down the vacuum.
It's a simple way to make dust collection more convenient without adding a separate switch.
WOODSMITH TIP: Check the Electrical Ratings. Before trying this setup, make sure the power strip is specifically rated for the combined load of your tool and vacuum, including motor startup current. Many household smart power strips are designed for electronics, not workshop equipment.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions, avoid overloading the circuit, and use a purpose-built automatic vacuum switch if your tools exceed the strip's ratings.
A Simple Upgrade for Dust Collection
With a compatible master-controlled power strip, there's no need to reach for a separate vacuum switch every time you make a cut.
Just turn on the tool, and the vacuum starts along with it.
It's a straightforward way to make your shop vacuum and dust collection setup more convenient while keeping your attention on the work.
