Simplify Cabinet Joinery with a Shop-Made Biscuit Joiner Jig
A biscuit joiner, also called a plate joiner, is a handy tool for assembling cabinets. But cutting biscuit slots in large workpieces, like cabinet sides, can be awkward. Supporting the panel while keeping the joiner properly aligned isn't always easy.
This simple shop-made biscuit joiner jig solves the problem by holding the workpiece securely and providing a stable reference surface for the tool.
A Simple Support for Large Cabinet Panels
The jig consists of a large vertical face attached to a box-like support assembly that clamps to your workbench.
An adjustable hardwood cleat on the front supports the cabinet panel. By raising or lowering the cleat, you can position the top edge of the workpiece flush with the top of the jig.
Once the panel is positioned, clamp it securely against the jig.
Now the fence of your biscuit joiner can rest on the top of the jig and workpiece while you cut the slots. This provides a stable reference and makes it easier to keep the tool properly aligned.
Adjust the Cleat for Different Workpieces
The adjustable cleat is what makes this jig so versatile.
A centered slot allows the cleat to move up or down. Once it's at the correct height, tighten the plastic knob to lock it in place.
To keep the cleat level as it moves, hardboard splines at each end fit into shallow grooves in the jig's face.
This prevents the cleat from twisting or shifting out of alignment.
Make Accurate Biscuit Slots with Less Hassle
To use the jig, clamp its support assembly securely to your workbench. Adjust the cleat until the top edge of the cabinet panel is flush with the top of the jig, then clamp the panel in place.
With the workpiece supported, you can concentrate on positioning the biscuit joiner and cutting the slots accurately.
Be sure the workpiece clamps are clear of the joiner's cutting path.
