Setting Up a Hollow Chisel Mortiser
Before making the cut, mark the location of the mortise on your workpiece. These layout lines provide a reference for positioning the fence and aligning the chisel.
Next, check the relationship between the drill bit and hollow chisel. As Phil explains, the lifter on the bit should be aligned with the point of the chisel. Proper bit installation and clearance help the mortiser remove chips efficiently.
With the machine set up and the workpiece secured, you're ready to start cutting.
The Right Sequence for Cutting a Mortise
The order of cuts makes a difference in how smoothly the mortising machine operates. Phil uses a simple three-step process:
Cut both ends first. Plunge the chisel at one end of the mortise, then move to the opposite end and make a second cut.
Drill alternating holes. Work along the mortise, leaving spaces slightly narrower than the width of the chisel. This helps keep the chisel square to the workpiece.
Remove the remaining waste. Make the final plunges between the holes to clean up the mortise and create smooth, straight sides.
Following this sequence helps the hollow chisel stay aligned while removing material efficiently.
The result is a clean mortise with square ends, ready for a matching tenon.
