Stow-Away Sawhorses

By: John Doyle
Clever knock-down sawhorse design saves space.

Sawhorses come in handy for a number of tasks in my shop and around the house. So I always like to keep a pair ready for whatever may come up next. The problem is most sawhorses are bulky and difficult to store. In an effort to build a better sawhorse, I came up with these. What makes them stand out is they quickly break down into individual sections for storage.

The key to the design is a stretcher that slides in place between the top of both legs and rests on two plywood brackets. To secure the assembly, I added a long bolt with a press-on knob to each end of the sawhorse. The bolts fit through a hole drilled in the brackets and into a threaded insert in the ends of the stretcher.

The sawhorses can be built in almost no time. And using standard “two-by” material helps keep the costs down.
