Shop-Made Edge Sander

By: Chris Fitch
This shop-built edge sander makes quick work of tough sanding jobs. Plus, it is constructed from common hardware and materials, so it is both practical and affordable.

Any tool that can help take the drudgery out of sanding is a welcome addition to most shops. A large edge sander is a perfect example. But many of us don’t have the funds for an expensive, dedicated stationary tool like this. So when our design team proposed this shop-made version, I knew we’d hit the jackpot for both practicality and affordability. You can build this sander from common materials like 3/4" plywood and then just add a motor, switch, some hardware, and a sanding belt and you are ready to get to work.
