Knock-Down Shelf

Look ma, no hardware! This knock-down shelving unit is held together without using any permanent joinery or hardware to hold the shelves to the end frames. Yet it's very sturdy.

The shelves rest on dowels in the end frames. This makes the whole unit easy to disassemble by just lifting shelves off the end dowels.

The sturdiness comes from stiffeners that are added to the back edges of the shelves. They serve several purposes including keeping the unit square, and supporting the weight of the books or other objects on the shelves. They also serve as a backstop to keep books and magazines from sliding off the back edge of the shelves.

We built our Knock-Down Shelf out of red oak.

Overall dimensions: 47-1/2" wide x 13-1/2" deep x 36-1/2" high
