Christmas Tree Ornaments32

The holiday season always sneaks up on us. Here are four ideas that you can use to decorate your home or give as gifts — all while honing your turning skills.

To use the trees as ornaments, all you need is to drive small, brass screweyes into the top. We picked those up from a hobby store — their Christmas displays are up pretty early.

Small projects like these are ideal for spraying on a finish. Shellac is a great choice. It provides a little color and just the right amount of protection. On the painted tree, we used a light green color called “Seedlings” by Chroma’s Jo Sonja. This is an acrylic craft paint available at Dick Blick.

Monterey Buffet38

A lesser-known West Coast design style inspired this dining room showpiece. Bold curves, a rich stain, and solid joinery make it fun to build.

The buffet is stained with Varathane "Dark Walnut" stain and sealed with two coats of lacquer. The crackle finish on the door panels starts with "Queenstown Gray" milk paint from General Finishes. Once that’s dry the panels are coated with liquid hide glue from Titebond. When dry to the touch, the outside of the panel is painted with “Sunflower” milk paint from The Real Milk Paint Company.

Drill Press Table46

In a weekend, you can upgrade one of your essential shop tools. A large table and fence provides better workpiece support and gives you more work holding options.

The faces of the drill press table and the fence are painted black. When the paint was dry all the parts were finished with two coats of lacquer.

Convertible Game Table52

Don’t let dinner interrupt your campaign. This table features a recessed playing surface capped with veneered panels so you can resume playing after you eat.

The hardware for the gaming table can be found at most hardware stores, and the felt can be purchased at a craft store or home center. We finished the table with a coat of oil and a few coats of spray lacquer.
